What is Ferrite Magnet
A ferrite is a ceramic material made by mixing and firing iron(III) oxide with one or more additional metallic elements, such as strontium, barium, manganese, nickel, and zinc. They are ferrimagnetic, meaning they are attracted by magnetic fields and can be magnetized to become permanent magnets. Type of Ferrites Magnet
Soft Ferrites Magnet
Ferrites, which are used in electromagnetic or transformer cores, contain zinc, nickel, and/or manganese compounds. They contain a low coercivity and are known as soft ferrites. The low coercivity means the magnetization of the material can easily reverse direction without dissipating more energy (hysteresis losses), while the high resistivity of the material prevents eddy currents in the core, the other energy source loss. Due to their comparatively low losses at the higher frequencies, they can be extensively used in the RF transformers and inductor cores in applications like loopstick and switched mode power supplies antennas used in the AM radios.
Semi-hard Ferrites Magnet
Cobalt ferrite with the chemical formula CoFe2O4 (CoO·Fe2O3) is in between both soft and hard magnetic material and can be usually classified as a semi-hard material. It is majorly used for its magnetostrictive applications such as actuators and sensors, a good thing to its high saturation magnetostriction (at ~200 ppm). Also, the cobalt ferrite has the benefits of being rare-earth-free, which makes it a good substitute for the Terfenol-D.
Furthermore, its magnetostrictive properties may be tuned by inducing a magnetic uniaxial anisotropy. This may be done by the magnetic field-assisted compaction, magnetic annealing, or the reaction under uniaxial pressure. This last solution contains the advantage of being ultra-fast (just within 20 min), with the use of spark plasma sintering. Also, the induced magnetic anisotropy in the cobalt ferrite can be beneficial to enhance the magnetoelectric effect in the composite.
Hard Ferrites Magnet
In contrast, the permanent ferrite magnets are produced of hard ferrites that contain a high remanence and high coercivity after magnetization. Barium and iron oxide or strontium carbonate can be used in the manufacturing of hard ferrite magnets. High coercivity is defined as the materials are more resistant to becoming demagnetized, an important characteristic for a permanent magnet. Also, they hold a high magnetic permeability.
These particular so-called ceramic magnets are very cheap and widely used in the household products like refrigerator magnets. The maximum magnetic field strength H is up to 30 to 160 kiloampere turns per meter (400 to 2000 oersteds), and the magnetic field B is up to 0.35 tesla. At the same time, the density of ferrite magnets is up to 5 g/cm3.
Application of Ferrites Magnet
Fridge Magnets and Novelty Items
Ferrite magnets are most commonly none as the fridge or hobby magnet, this is because they tend to be cheaper than its magnet family but are still reasonably strong. We also provide adhesive ferrite magnets that are great for making homemade fridge magnets.
Loudspeakers
At the front of a loudspeaker, there is a fabric or lightweight metal cone. The outer part of the cone is fixed into the outer part of the loudspeaker. The inner part is fixed to an iron coil that sits just in front of a permanent magnet. When you hook up the loudspeaker to a stereo, electrical signals feed through the speaker cables into the coil. This turns the coil into a temporary magnet. As the electrical current flows back and forth in the cables, the magnet either attracts or repels the permanent magnet. This moves the coil back and forward, pulling and pushing the loudspeaker cone, allowing the speaker to pump out sound into the air.
Pot Magnets
Pot magnets are designed for clamping directly onto a steel surface; they are made from a large magnet encased within a steel shell. They are magnetic on one face only, creating a solid clamping force. However, they should not be used to attract other magnets or attract through a gap as they have a shallow depth of magnetic field. Pot magnets have many advantages and can be supplied with a tapped hole, a countersunk hole, a counter-bored hole, a threaded stud or a threaded collar all for convenient mounting. They can also be supplied with hooks and eyebolt attachments, ideal for hanging a variety of items.
Very large plate magnets to remove ferrous contamination from processing lines
During the production process metal parts can enter food products. Large ferrite plates can be used within the production line to help the prevention of metal contamination in the food industry.
Motors, Generators and Alternators
Ferrite magnets are embedded into the rotors used in motors. The magnet is attracted to or is wrapped in coil within the motor assembly. When the motor is turned on the coil turns into a temporary magnet, this is what causes the motor to rotate. When the source of electrical power is removed, the wire loses its magnetic qualities and the motor stops.
Lifting Magnets
Limpet magnets are an assembly of magnets designed to give a superior hold against uneven and dirty surfaces. They are ideal for semi-permanent attachments where you are likely to leave the magnet in place for the foreseeable future. Common applications include attaching headboards to walls, holding doors open, gate fixtures and hanging pictures. Our ferrite limpet pot magnets come with a mild steel shell. This combination of materials gives the magnetic assembly a strong resistance to corrosion, and they have a maximum operating temperature of 180 degrees Celsius, making them ideal for outdoor applications. These magnets come with a safe-handling warning; because they are so powerful they can be dangerous if not handled carefully.
Sea Searcher Magnets
Sea-Searcher recovery magnet are used to retrieve tools dropped overboard. These devices are used by Police, Navies and Rescue Forces worldwide. Ferrite magnets are used in these devices due to there resistance to corrosion.
Clamps
Ferrite clamps are typically used to improve the performance of sound systems, such as microphones. Ferrite clamps usually in two and is clamped around a conducting wire. Ferrite is a highly permeable material, which makes them effectively absorb some of the noise in the wire.
Switches and Relays
Ferrite switches have a wide variety of uses in commercial, military and low and high power applications. These include low noise amplifier redundancy switches, high power isolators and switch matrices. Ferrite switches are suitable for these applications as they are highly reliable and have a high resistance to demagnetisation.
Sweeper Magnets
Our handheld magnetic sweeper provides a convenient, durable and effective operation of sweeping smaller areas to attract ferrous items like nails, screws, metal shards and building debris. Once the sweeper has attracted the unwanted debris, simply wipe away.
Other applications include medical instruments, brakes, eddy current devices, security systems, the list could go on! If your application requires a magnet that is resistant to heat, demagnetisation, corrosion and is cost effective, you should definitely consider using Ferrite magnets.
Sensors
Such as Hall sensors, car position sensors, motor speed sensors, weighing sensors, security alarm sensors, magnetostrictive displacement sensors, car brake sensors, car wheel speed sensors, magnetron sensors, car speed sensors, water flow sensors, etc.
Water Pumps
Such as fish tank water pumps, circulating pumps, drainage pump rotors, energy-saving water pumps, submersible pumps, deep water pumps, etc.
How are Ferrite Magnets Made?
The production of ferrite magnets begins with calcining a finely powdered mixture of iron oxide and strontium carbonate to produce a metallic-oxide material. In some grades, other chemicals such as cobalt and lanthanum are added to improve the magnetic performance. Once cooled, the already fine powder is then milled a number of times reducing the calcined material to fine small particles that each particle consists of one single magnetic domain.
The powder is then pressed and compacted into a die and sintered. If the process of shaping and pressing takes place within an externally applied magnetic field the particles forming the magnet will be aligned and the magnet produced will be anisotropic. For this to be achieved the particles would first need to be mixed with water to form a slurry material.
Once pressed, the compacted particles are then sintered at very high temperatures to make the particles fuse together and make one single magnet and then magnetised to saturation. Ferrite magnets are magnetised fairly easy and don't require a large external magnetising field.
If the magnet requires machining then it will be machined using diamond coated machining tools and then coated or plated with the chosen coating.
